City relaxes on summer nights

Heres the schedule of Sandys theater, concerts, movies

by: CONTRIBUTED PHOTO - Hanz Araki and Kathryn Claire will join to create some extraordinary Celtic music during one of the Sunday concerts in Meinig Park. The city of Sandy is offering free movies and music concerts throughout the summer in Meinig Park.

The annual program is called Sandy Summer Sounds and Starlight Cinema. The festivities get started in just over a week with a Shakespearean production of “The Merchant of Venice.”

Printed schedules are available at City Hall, the Sandy Library, Sandy Community Center and Sandy Historical Museum. A schedule also is printed below:

On stage

Shakespeare in the Park is an outreach of the Portland Actors Ensemble, a nonprofit organization, and will be performed at 6 p.m. Sunday, July 7, on the Theater in the Woods stage. This year, the play will be “The Merchant of Venice.”

Theater in the Woods is the small amphitheater in Meinig Park, which generally fills up quickly. Bring a stadium chair or a blanket. Folding chairs and high-back lounge chairs do not fit in the amphitheater.

Each concert series begins with a festival. The Wine in the Woods Festival opens the Sunday concert series, and the Brewgrass Festival gets things rolling at the Wednesday Main Stage shows. All concerts are held from 6:30-8 p.m. unless otherwise noted.

Reserve the five Saturday evenings in August to attend a walk-in movie theater without walls, but with Meinig Park’s tree branches as a ceiling.

Coats and blankets are necessary because it often gets cooler that most people realize. And a blanket or a low lawn chair will be useful.
