Portland actors bring Shakespeare to Sandy

Theater in the Woods at Meinig Park July 6

To start off the 15 nights of Sandy Summer Sounds and Starlight Cinema, residents are invited to enjoy Theatre in the Woods, this time with a Shakespeare play.

Portland Actors Ensemble will perform Shakespeare’s "Antony and Cleopatra" at 6 p.m. Sunday, July 6, at Meinig Memorial Park, 17670 Meinig Ave.

This will be the fifth year Portland Actors Ensemble is bringing Shakespeare to Sandy.

Director Elizabeth Huffman describes the play as a culture-clashing political love story. She draws on her Arabic roots, lifelong fascination with Roman history and an interest in today’s multicultural landscape to examine Shakespeare’s play.

Huffman’s rendition will not be your average Shakespeare performance. It features contemporary music, an international cast and a mystical soothsayer.

The play will be performed at the smaller of the two stages on the southeast end of the park. Bench seating is provided, and play viewers are welcome to bring cushions or stadium chairs for support. There is no room for lawn chairs.

The show will go on, rain or shine, and the performance is free. Donations will be accepted.
