SHS newspaper staff achieves most awards since 2008

Mountain Echoes staff received 30 awards from Oregon Publication Olympics

The Sandy High School student newspaper, the Mountain Echoes, won 30 awards at this year’s Oregon Publication Olympics, the most it has received since 2008.

The state’s high school journalism awards are sponsored by Northwest Scholastic Press. Submissions can receive ratings of honorable mention, excellent or superior. One submission from each category is selected as Best of Category.

Awards were given for coverage between March 2013 and March 2014.

Under Editor-in-Chief McKenzie Shaffer, two staff members of the SHS newspaper were awarded Best of Category. Senior Ana Glazier, Mountain Echoes Spotlight editor, was recognized for a double-page layout on student jobs. Glazier also received a superior rating for two other double-page layouts.

Junior Grace Knapp, news editor, was selected for her sports opinion piece on balancing being a student and an athlete. Knapp will be a senior next year and will serve as editor-in-chief.

This is the second time the student paper has achieved two Best of Category awards.

Four other Echoes staff members received superior ratings: senior Madie Smith for news feature writing, senior Moriah Shay for news writing, senior Rachel Hansen for sports feature writing, and senior McKenzie Schaffer for column writing.

Journalism teacher J.D. McIntire surprised the staff with the news at the paper’s end of the year awards day.
