Wind ensemble students bond, represent Sandy well on trip

SHS band students traveled to the PacWest festival in California

The Sandy High School Wind Ensemble visited the University of the Pacific in Stockton, Calif., for the PacWest festival earlier this month. Band Director Rob McGlothin and students felt it was a great opportunity to bond.

The students left for their five-day trip Thursday, April 10. The band performed along with other groups from Oregon, California and Hawaii.

McGlothin said he couldn’t have been more pleased with the band’s performance. “The group played one of their strongest performances despite covering 750 miles in the two days prior,” he said.

At the PacWest festival, students also listened to highly accomplished bands such as the University of the Pacific Symphonic Bands. One student said the concert was one of their favorite parts — “It was great to watch a band perform at its full potential.”

Students got the chance to attend “beyond the band room” workshops to talk about a variety of subjects ranging from leadership to tai chi and yoga.

But the trip was not just contained to the festival. The students also had a chance to stop and sightsee at Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco and celebrate this year’s achievements at Six Flags in Vallejo.

McGlothin described the trip as a memorable experience for his students.

“There were quite a few who had never ridden on a roller coaster or seen a live dolphin,” McGlothin said. “For each student the experience was different, but broadened their perspective of their world.”

McGlothin also said he felt the students represented Sandy High School very well, both on and off the stage. “This group is one of the best I have ever toured with in terms of their behavior and the way they treat each other,” he said.
