Reach to build nation's largest Passive House apartment project

by: COURTESY OF REACH CDC - The Orchards at Orenco Phase 1 will be the nation's largest Passive House project. Reach Community Development Corp. says it will build the nation’s largest multifamily housing project using Passive House standards, which rely on super-energy efficient construction techniques.

The Hillsboro development, called Orchards at Orenco Phase 1, will provide 57 units of affordable housing, designed for working families earning $30,000 a year or less. The Passive House standards will assure low energy costs to go with the affordable rents, which will range from $611 to $733 a month.

Construction costs will be an estimated 10 percent to 15 percent higher to meet the Passive House standards, Reach estimates.

A groundbreaking celebration for the $14.6 million project is planned for June 17, featuring music, ice cream, and a visit from Hillsboro Mayor Jerry Willey.

The project is located at 6520 N.E. Cherry Drive. Parking is available at Sonrise Church, at N.W. 229th and N.E. Campus Way.
