Portland youths climb walls to fight climate change

Led by 3rd-grader Dylan Beckett, the youths are organizing a “Climb-a-Thon for Climate Change” — collecting sponsors, much like a traditional walk-a-thon, for every wall they scale at the Portland Rock Gym on April 4, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

“I think that maybe if grown-ups see that kids care about climate change, maybe they will think about it too,” Beckett says.

His effort has attracted a lot of support from classmates. So far, they have enlisted 110 sponsors, with all funds going to 350.org, the international activist group that’s focused on climate issues.

Beckett says the students have learned the International Anthem for Climate Change, and promise to sing it all together before they start climbing.
