MoveOn picks Portland teen to lead campaign against fracking

Portland teenager Megan Larkin, a junior at Riverdale High School, is launching a local campaign against natural gas and oil “fracking.”

Larkin was named by MoveOn.org as one of 100 grassroots activists across the country to lead its FrackingFighting initiative. The activists will share $50,000 and get materials, training and strategic support from MoveOn.org.

Fracking, also known as hydraulic fracturing, combines horizontal drilling techniques and massive injections of sand and chemical-laced water to loosen shale oil and gas.

“Although Oregon doesn’t currently have any fracking facilities, the state shouldn’t be supporting the product of such a destructive business by shipping fracked oil,” Larkin says. “This is turning a blind eye to the fact that fracking is destructive to countless people in other states, with dangerous chemicals leaching into the groundwater and poisoning their drinking water.”
