Foster Road to become more bike friendly

Foster Road is headed for a road diet, and that means safer access for bicyclists.

Portland Bureau of Transportation staff are recommending that the busy four-lane road lose two through-traffic lanes between Southeast 50th and 90th avenues.

After shrinking the vehicle lanes down to one in each direction, the city would add on-street bike lanes and a middle refuge and left-turn lane.

In addition, the staff recommendation calls for more curb extensions to make it less daunting for pedestrians to cross Foster, wider sidewalks east of 84th Avenue and more street lights and street trees. Most on-street parking spaces would be retained under the proposal.

The staff recommendation jibes with ideas emerging from a stakeholder advisory committee that’s been working on Foster Road’s configuration.

Similar road diets have occurred on Southeast Division Street between 60th and 80th avenues, Northeast Glisan Street and elsewhere.

PBOT will explain its idea at an open house on Thursday, Dec. 5, at SE Works, 7916 S.E. Foster Road. Interested residents can drop in any time between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Light snacks will be provided.
