New plan, coalition aim to protect Portland's Forest Park

The Forest Park Conservancy released an 80-page conservation plan this week for the treasured park and surrounding private lands. Known as the Greater Forest Park Conservation Initiative, it details 36 strategies to alleviate the spread of invasive species, protect loss of wildlife habitat and address climate change issues.

The plan’s unveiling coincided with the birth of the Forest Park Alliance, a new coalition of public and private sector stakeholders that will work to implement the conservation strategy. The alliance includes Portland Parks & Recreation, Metro, the Audubon Society, the city Bureau of Environmental Services, Columbia Land Trust, Forest Park Neighborhood Association, Friends of Trees, West Multnomah Soil & Water Conservation District, the Intertwine Alliance and the Linnton Neighborhood Association.

The coalition will help with fundraising to tackle projects suggested by the plan.

By encompassing land outside the park, the plan recognizes that the Forest Park ecosystem doesn’t stop at the park boundaries.

“The saying goes, ‘It takes a village.’ That is absolutely the case when it comes to Forest Park,” says Renee Myers, executive director of the Forest Park Conservancy.
