Worried about oil spills from increased shipments through Portland?

Alarmed by the prospect of oil spills stemming from increased crude oil shipments through the Portland area?

A group of federal, state, and local experts who respond to environmental emergencies will host a public forum to discuss the issue, and representatives from Union Pacific and BNSF railroad have agreed to participate.

The forum, hosted by the Northwest Area Committee, is slated for all day Tuesday, Nov. 19, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. It’ll be at the Hilton Executive Tower’s 23rd-floor conference room, 921 S.W. 6th Ave. in downtown Portland.

The safety of oil shipments is on the public’s mind due to a proposed massive oil terminal at the Port of Vancouver, Washington, by Tesoro and Savage Companies. The crude oil would arrive by train or boat from North Dakota and get transferred to barges or ships and sent to oil refineries up and down the West Coast, including Alaska and British Columbia.

The environmental responders will discuss the risks posed by the increased oil shipments and what the response might be to spills and other accidents.
