Cuthbertson signs to throw for BYU

The Bowmen senior to compete for the Cougar track team

by: DAN BROOD - ON THE DOTTED LINE -- Sherwood High School senior Elyse Cuthbertson signs her national letter of intent to compete in track and field at Brigham Young University.SHERWOOD — The throws have taken Elyse Cuthbertson places.

They’ve taken her to storied Hayward Field in Eugene, site of the Oregon High School State Track and Field Championships.

They’ve put her in the Sherwood High School record book.

And, in the future, the throws will be taking her even farther — all the way to Provo, Utah.

Cuthbertson, a Sherwood High School senior and a star thrower for the Lady Bowmen girls track and field team, signed a national letter of intent on March 18 to compete at the collegiate level at Brigham Young University.

“I’m really excited,” Cuthbertson said after signing the letter of intent in front of family, friends and coaches during a ceremony at Sherwood High School. “This feels good. I’ve always been looking to go there, and now it’s official.”

Cuthbertson said she has family connections to the Utah area.

“And, when I visited there, I fell in love with the campus,” she said.

She also visited Oregon State University, as well as a few other schools.

“But my main focus has always been BYU,” she said.

Cuthbertson said that BYU will be looking for her to throw the javelin, and maybe the discus as well.

“I know competing in college will be different, but I’m ready,” she said.

She sure looked to be ready during a standout junior season at Sherwood High School.

As a Lady Bowmen junior, Cuthbertson set new personal bests in the javelin, with a throw of 131 feet, 1 inch, in the discus, with a mark of 120-1, and in the shot put with a toss of 38-9.

Cuthbertson went on to place second in the discus event at the Class 5A state meet a year ago, and she was third in the shot put.

Her discus and shot put top marks are the best in Sherwood school history, while her javelin mark is second on the Lady Bowmen all-time list.

And, before she moves on to BYU, Cuthbertson is looking to have a big senior season at Sherwood, where she’ll be competing alongside her younger sister, Payge, a Lady Bowmen sophomore, who also is a top thrower for the squad.

“Right now, I’m looking to finish out the year with a great track season,” Elyse Cuthbertson said.
