Bowmen roll in football playoff opener

Sherwood will host Crescent Valley in Friday's second round

SHERWOOD — The Sherwood High School football team didn’t run very many offensive plays at all in its playoff game with Churchill.

That’s OK, the Bowmen sure made the most of the plays they ran.

Sherwood, despite having only 25 offensive plays from scrimmage, rambled for 451 total yards on its way to rolling to a 55-0 win over the Lancers in a Class 5A state playoff first-round game played Friday at Sherwood High School.

“We took care of business,” Sherwood coach Greg Lawrence. “The kids were really ready to play. We wanted to get to them early, and hit them quick.”

Churchill, the No. 3 team out of Special District 3, finished its season with a final overall record of 4-6.

Defending state champion Sherwood, the Northwest Oregon Conference champion and the No. 1 team in the OSAA power rankings, improved to 10-0 on the season. The Bowmen also advance to face Crescent Valley in a quarterfinal round game of the state playoffs, set to start at 7 p.m. Friday at Sherwood High School.

The Bowmen got their postseason off to a flying start in last week’s opener with Churchill. The Sherwood offense didn’t face third down of fourth down in the contest.

Sherwood senior Keegan Lawrence gave his team a quick 7-0 lead by scoring on a 90-yard run the first time he touched the ball from scrimmage.

Senior fullback Jake Reimer added a 2-yard TD scoring blast and Keegan Lawrence teamed up with senior quarterback Kevin Larkin for a 13-yard touchdown pass play to give the Bowmen a 21-0 advantage at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Sherwood got a 48-yard touchdown pass from Larkin to junior tight end Zak Taylor and a 33-yard scoring run by senior fullback Mickey Schaefer to push the margin to 35-0 by halftime.

In the third quarter, Keegan Lawrence scored on a 42-yard run and Larkin threw his third TD pass of the game, this one going for two yards to senior receiver Nic Clarke.

Sherwood senior Brian Lee scored on an 11-yard run in the fourth quarter to cap off the scoring in the Bowmen’s 55-0 victory.

Larkin, like the rest of the Bowmen, turned in an efficient performance in the victory. The senior QB completed seven of eight pass attempts for 177 yards and three touchdowns.

Clarke had three catches for 25 yards and Taylor had two receptions for 93.

Meanwhile, Keegan Lawrence touched the ball just three times on offense — rushing twice for 132 yards and also having a 13-yard reception — with all three of those plays resulting in touchdowns.

Schaefer ran for 44 yards on two carries and Reimer had 41 yards on three carries.

And, while the offense was doing its thing, the Bowmen defense recorded it third shutout of the season.

“On defense, the kids were lights-out again,” Greg Lawrence said. “We kept the pressure on their quarterback all night.”

Senior Jordan Kurahara, Reimer and senior Martin Layna each had a pair of quarterback sacks in the victory. Reimer also paced the team with six total tackles.

This Friday, Sherwood will take on a 7-3 Crescent Valley team that placed third in the Mid-Willamette Conference and went on to get a 36-29 win over Wilsonville this past Friday in a first-round state playoff contest.

“They’re a big, physical team that gets after it up front,” Lawrence said of the Raiders.

Crescent Valley is led by 6-foot-5, 195-pound senior quarterback Tanner Sanders, who is an Oregon State University commit. Through the team’s first nine games of the season, Sanders has completed 88 of 146 pass attempts for 1,663 yards and nine touchdowns. He’s also run for 424 yards and eight more scores.

“He throws a good ball, and he’ll also scramble a bit,” Lawrence said of Sanders. “And their defense is very aggressive. It’s going to be a new test for us, but our kids are fired up and they’re ready for the challenge.”

The winner of Friday’s game at Sherwood will face either Ashland or Roosevelt in a Class 5A state playoff semifinal game on Nov. 23.
