Bowmen efficient in win over Lions

Sherwood moves to 4-0 on the season with 54-13 victory

SHERWOOD — The Sherwood High School football team didn’t have the chance to run very many offensive plays.

But the Bowmen sure made the most of the plays they had.

Sherwood, despite having only 28 offensive plays from scrimmage, jumped out to a 54-0 lead on its way to posting a 54-13 win over St. Helens in a Northwest Oregon Conference game played Friday at Sherwood High School.

St. Helens fell to 1-3 on the season and to 0-3 in conference play with the setback.

With the victory, its 33rd straight in regular-season play, Sherwood moved to 4-0 on the season and to 2-0 in NWOC games, putting the Bowmen in a tie with Liberty for first place in the conference standings.

The Bowmen, in their limited amount of offensive plays in Friday’s game, boasted a somewhat balanced attack, gaining 277 yards on the ground and 159 through the air. Sherwood also scored four rushing touchdowns and four passing TDs.

The passing attack got Sherwood on the scoreboard first, as senior quarterback Kevin Larkin tossed a 12-yard touchdown pass to senior receiver Ryan Pino to give the Bowmen a quick 7-0 lead.

Sherwood also got a 26-yard touchdown run by senior fullback Jake Reimer and, on a trick play, a 35-yard TD pass from Pino to senior Nick Dickson to open up a 21-0 first-quarter lead.

In the second quarter, the Bowmen got a 54-yard touchdown run by senior Keegan Lawrence, a 16-yard scoring pass from Larkin to junior Mason Rivers and a 48-yard TD pass from Larkin to junior tight end Zak Taylor to take a 40-0 halftime advantage.

Lawrence scored on an 84-yard run to open the third quarter scoring. Senior A.J. Smith added a 24-yard touchdown run to give Sherwood a 54-0 lead.

A pair of St. Helens touchdowns made the final score 54-13.

For the game, Larkin completed seven of 12 pass attempts for 123 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions.

Lawrence led the Bowmen rushing attack with 154 yards on just four carries. Rivers had 38 yards on one carry and Smith had 30 yards on two carries.

For the Sherwood defense, senior Brian Lee, Reimer, sophomore Tanner Dilree and junior Michael Stocker each had a quarterback sack. Reimer and senior Andrew Rice each intercepted a St. Helens pass. Rice also led the team with six total tackles.

For St. Helens, senior quarterback Gage Bumgardner completed 10 of 22 passes for 70 yards. Bumgardner also led the Lions with 59 rushing yards on six carries.

Sherwood will be back in action Friday when it hosts Liberty in a conference game — with sole possession of first place in the standings at state — starting at 7 p.m.

The Falcons are 3-1 on the season.
