Area stars set for Les Schwab Bowl

Seven local players to take part in the all-star football contest

by: DAN BROOD - SHERWOOD ALL-STAR -- Nick Rowlands, a 2013 Sherwood High School graduate, is one of three Bowmen that will be playing in Saturday's Les Schwab Bowl.HILLSBORO — There’s going to be a Timberwolf on the same sideline as three Tigers.

That already makes things plenty interesting — but it gets even better.

That’s because, on the other sideline, there’s going to be a trio of Bowmen who are ready for action.

That said, there should be a strong local flavor at the 66th-annual Les Schwab Bowl, a high school football all-star game, which will start at 6 p.m. Saturday at Hillsboro Stadium.

The game will feature many of the top graduating Class 5A and Class 6A players from around the state.

Tigard and Tualatin players will be part of the South team in Saturday’s contest. Sherwood’s players will take the field for the North squad.

Among the Tigard players set to take part in Saturday’s game is Zach Floyd (5-foot-10, 180 pounds), who is listed as a running back/defensive back for the South team.

Floyd had what only could be described as a spectacular senior season for the Tigard squad that won the Pacific Conference championship and reached the semifinal round of the Class 6A state playoffs.

As a Tiger senior, Floyd rushed for 2,021 yards on 227 carries with 27 touchdowns. He also had two more receiving touchdowns, five passing touchdowns out of the wildcat formation, two kickoff returns for scores, one punt return for a TD and one interception return for a touchdown.

In addition, Floyd also had a punting average of more than 38 yards a kick.

Floyd earned first-team All-Pacific Conference honors at running back, defensive back and at punter. He was an honorable mention all-league pick as a kick returner. Floyd also garnered first team Class 6A All-State honors as a running back. He was an honorable mention all-state pick as a punter.

Tigard will have another electrifying running back in the contest in Kaz Greene (5-6, 160).

As a Tiger senior, Greene, despite missing a pair of games due to injury, rushed for 675 yards and 11 touchdowns on 68 carries (a 9.9 yards-a-carry average), and he also had a team-high 18 pass receptions for 426 yards and three more touchdowns.

Tigard’s third representative in the game will be Cain Adams (6-2, 270), who is listed as an offensive lineman/defensive lineman for the South.

As a Tiger senior, Adams was a first-team All-Pacific Conference pick on both offense and defense. He also earned honorable-mention all-state accolades on both offense and defense.

The trio of Tigers will be joined on the South team by Tualatin’s Dane Simonsen (6-0, 220), who is listed at offensive line/defensive line.

by: DAN BROOD - ALL-STAR TIGER -- Kaz Greene, a 2013 Tigard High School graduate, is one of three Tigers that will be playing for the South squad at the Les Schwab Bowl, which will be held Saturday at Hillsboro Stadium. As a Timberwolf senior, Simonsen was named the Pacific Conference Defensive Player of the Year. He also was a first-team All-State selection on the defensive line.

Sherwood, which downed Marist 46-20 in the 2012 Class 5A state championship game, will have three players on the North team.

Among them is Cristian Morris (6-0, 185), who will play at running back.

As a Bowmen senior, Morris rushed for 1,817 yards and 25 touchdowns on 122 carries (a 14.9 yards-a-carry average). He also had 10 catches for 236 yards and three more TDs. Morris also had three interceptions on defense.

He was a first-team All-Northwest Oregon Conference pick both at running back and defensive back. Morris also earned first-team Class 5A All-State honors at both running back and defensive back.

Sherwood’s Joseph Balfour (5-11, 175) is listed as a quarterback/safety for the North team.

Balfour did an efficient job running the Bowmen offense while also completing 39 of 77 pass attempts for 656 yards and nine touchdowns, but he did most of his damage on defense for the Bowmen.

Playing at an outside linebacker spot, Balfour had six quarterback sacks, three interceptions and three fumble recoveries.

He was named the NWOC Defensive Player of the Year and he shared Class 5A Defensive Player of the Year honors with Silverton’s Chris Garcia.

Balfour’s older brother, Michael, played in the 2011 Les Schwab Bowl.

The third Sherwood representative for this year’s game is lineman Nick Rowlands (6-1, 210).

As a Bowmen senior Rowlands anchored the Bowmen offensive line from his center position while also coming up with four quarterback sacks as a defensive end.

He earned first-team all-league and first-team Class 5A All-State honors at both positions.

There will be even more of a Sherwood influence to the North team, as Bowmen coach Greg Lawrence will serve as head coach for the North team. His coaching staff includes Doug Dean of Southridge, Adam Guenther of Wilsonville, Todd Nagel of Gresham, Steve Pine of Central Catholic and Bill Smith of Century.

Tigard coach Craig Ruecker will be one of the assistant coaches for the South squad. Lane Johnson of Sheldon will be the South’s head coach. Other assistants for the team include Thurman Bell of Roseburg, John Mannion of Silverton, Jay Minyard of Sprague and Nathan Stanley of Redmond.

Saturday’s game will wrap up a week full of activities for the North and South teams.

Event proceeds from the Les Schwab Bowl benefit the Oregon Athletic Coaches Association general scholarship fund and all of Oregon’s Class 5A and 6A schools.
