Body of George Fox student found in Sherwood
Daniel Mellers, a George Fox University student, was found dead Monday evening in Sherwood. Suicide is suspected.
An investigation began over the weekend when Mellers, 21, failed to return to his room after telling roommates he was walking to a convenience store to buy soda, according to Capt. Jeff Kosmicki of the Newberg-Dundee Police Department. Mellers' car, a grey 2012 Toyota Corolla, was missing. Police obtained information from Mellers' cell phone provider that his phone was in Sherwood, about 10 miles northeast of the university.
On Monday, a Sherwood resident contacted Sherwood Police after recognizing Mellers' car and Colorado license plate near Southwest Houston Drive and Spratlin Lane. Police from both Newberg-Dundee and Sherwood canvased the neighborhood, then got the car unlocked. At approximately 7:30 p.m. Monday, they located Mellers' body in the trunk.
"Based on the details learned during this investigation, we are confident Daniel took his own life and there is no threat to the public," Newberg-Dundee Police Department said.
Police contacted the staff at George Fox University to let them know, so they could prepare their students and faculty for the news.
