Vancouver soccer star faces deportation following sex conviction

Yahphol Valentin Patino-Cardena lives in Sherwood

A star player with Spartans Futbol Club in Vancouver, Wash., was arrested March 12 by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations and placed in removal proceedings after a review of his immigration and criminal history revealed he was potentially deportable due to a recent sex conviction.

Yahphol Valentin Patino-Cardena, 20, of Sherwood, was taken into custody in Hillsboro without incident, according to a news release from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The federal agency wants to remove Patino-Cardena to Mexico in the wake of his January conviction for first degree attempted sexual abuse of a child under 14, a class C felony under Oregon law, the release stated. He was sentenced to five years’ probation and required to register as a sex offender, immigration officials say.

Lawful permanent residents, such as Patino-Cardena, become subject to possible deportation if they are convicted of crimes defined as aggravated felonies or crimes involving moral turpitude. An immigration judge with the Department of Justice’s Executive Office for Immigration Review will make the final determination, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials.
