Woman dies after being struck on Elwert Road
The woman died while retrieving her mail
A 62-year-old Sherwood woman out to retrieve her mail was killed Monday evening after being struck by a pickup truck as she crossed Southwest Elwert Road.
Joan Carol Deyoung-Burklund died at the scene after a vehicle driven by Wesley Crockett of Forest Grove did not see her until the last second, according to Sgt. David Thompson, a spokesman for the Washington County Sheriffs Department.
The accident occurred in the 19200 block of Southwest Elwert Road near Southwest Schroeder Lane in unincorporated Washington County.
Thompson said Crockett called 911 (along with another witness), remained at the scene and cooperated with sheriffs deputies. Members of the Washington County Crash Analysis Reconstruction Team (CART) responded to investigate the crash with a preliminary investigation determining that Crockett was driving his pickup truck north on Southwest Elwert Road, an unlit country road, at or below the 55 mph speed limit.
Investigators do not believe that alcohol or drugs on the part of the driver were a factor in the crash and Crocket was not issued any citations and is not being charged with any crimes at this time, said Thompson.
