Golf fundraiser to benefit brain tumor surgery for Cole Smith

An upcoming fundraiser has been set up to benefit Cole Smith, a 7-year-old Sherwood boy who is suffering the traumatic effects of two deep-seated potentially fatal brain tumors.

The public is invited to a special fundraiser on Sept. 8 at Heron Lake Golf Course, 3500 N. Victory Boulevard in Portland. Tickets are $100 per person in an effort to raise more than $100,000 to help cover travel, hospital stays and the portion of the surgical cost insurance will not cover for a special operation.by: SUBMITTED PHOTO - A benefit golf fundraiser has been set for Cole Smith, a Sherwood boy who suffers from brain tumors.

Cole’s tumors keep him constantly in pain, preventing him from riding a bike, building Lego towers and all the things kids love to do.

As a result, Cole is expected to soon undergo a new revolutionary brain surgery in Los Angeles at the Skull Base Institute that involves making a small dime-sized incision behind the ear, accessing the tumors with endoscopic tools and essentially vacuuming them out.

The updated endoscopic approach that Cole hopes to undergo generally allows patients to return home within 48 hours of the surgery.
