What's in a name? That which was called Sherwood Town Center won't be called that any more

While it might be only a minor concession in what’s turned into a controversial shopping complex that will include a Walmart store, confusion between that center and the city’s push to determine the future core of the city has ended.

That’s because Gramor Development, developers of a 20-acre shopping complex planned for Langer Farms Parkway, has agreed to change the shopping center’s name.

From now on, what was originally known as the Sherwood Town Center will be known as Parkway Village at Sherwood. The retail venture includes Walmart and an estimated 20 retail shops.

Confusion began shortly after the name of the new center was announced on May 6, given the fact that Sherwood Town Center has long been the name of the general area the city has identified as the core for future retail and commercial growth, a location required under a Metro mandate.

City Manager Joe Gall said he recently received an email and voicemail from Barry Cain, president of Gramor Development, saying the name of the shopping complex had changed. The response was part of a previous request from the city requesting a name change to avoid confusion.

Metro’s Town Center concept is part of the regional government’s 2040 Growth Management plan, a document designed to determine where growth is most likely to occur over the next 50 years for Portland-metro area cities. Sherwood is still in the process of determining where it’s town center, which requires cities to provide localized services to tens of thousands of people within a 2- to 3-square-mile radius, will be.

Last year, many residents who gave input on the location agreed that both the old Six Corners area and Old Town should be the formal location for the Sherwood Town Center. Meanwhile, the Sherwood Planning Department is still seeking comments through an online survey.
