Baseball: Indians top Tillamook 6-1
Scappoose gets a two-RBI triple from Robby Backus to top Tillamook
After a 6-1 defeat of Tillamook on Tuesday evening, Scappoose is just two wins away from wrapping up the Cowapa League title.
The Indians got a big triple from junior Robby Backus in the top of the first inning that scored a pair, and though the Cheesemakers responded with a score in the bottom of the inning, Scappoose was able to pull away and add to their growing three-game winning streak.
Leading 2-1 headed to the top of the second, Scappoose put Anthony Bernal on base, but quickly gave up two outs with Bernal advancing as far as second with Jake Ford up to bat. Facing a full count, Ford connected on a pair of foul balls before being walked, and a single from Wyatt Patton loaded the bases, and scored Bernal, who sped around third to home.
Ford was scored on the next at-bat on a single from Will Sprute, putting the Indians up 4-1. The road team never looked back, knocking in another scored in the top of the third and finally taking a 6-1 lead in the top of the fifth when Steven Johnson jumped on an error and scored.
The Indians overcame 11 strikeouts from Tillamook senior Matt Strang, who also gave up 10 hits but walked only three batters. Scappoose will host Seaside on Thursday, May 15 at 5 p.m. before traveling to Astoria on May 16.
