St. Helens gets a two-run homer from junior Ryne Poorman to beat Liberty 4-1
They might not have much breathing room, but should the playoffs start on Friday, May 9, the Lions baseball team would be playing.
Thanks to a 4-1 victory over Liberty on May 7, St. Helens (7-14, 5-9 NWOC) finally jumped into the top-24 in the Class 5A power rankings with three games remaining in the season. The top 24 teams make the post season regardless of their finish in their respective leagues, and as the Lions play all three remaining games against teams under .500, the chances of extra baseball seem sunny.
On Friday, May 2, Tyler Stangland ripped a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh as St. Helens topped Wilsonville 4-3 to pick up their first league win since April 15.
With the score tied at three, Senior Adam Spencer was walked without a swing, and moved to second on Josh Kellers sacrifice bunt. He hustled to third on a hard grounder to left field from Stangland, but as he turned the corner, home plate was ripe for the picking. Spencer beat the ball to home, sending the Cats packing and snapping the Lions slide at seven games.
Ryne Poorman pitched a complete game for the Lions, throwing out four strikes and giving up four hits in seven innings of play. St. Helens finished the game perfect in the field with no errors.
St. Helens was shut out in their next offering, an 8-0 loss on the road to Liberty, but the Lions found payback the very next day. With the score tied at one run apiece, St. Helens got a single from Stangland who was pushed to second on a sacrifice from Bryce Winnier. Stangland moved to third on Bryce Mulcahy's grounder, and with Bryson Takemoto at the plate, Stangland raced home on an error at second base to give the Lions a 2-1 lead.
Then came the hammer: Poorman stepped up and crushed his second pitch over the left field fence to score a pair and effectively put the game away for the Lions.
St. Helens will close out their series with Liberty on Friday, May 9, taking on the Falcons on the road. They'll finish the regular season with a pair of games against Milwaukie (6-16, 3-11 NWOC) at home on May 13 and on the road on May 16. All three games begin at 4:30 p.m.
