Baseball: Lions fall to Aloha
St. Helens struggles to get hits down the stretch, and lose 1-0 lead to Aloha
St. Helens could hardly get anything past Aloha pitcher Evan Lascelles, who struck out seven batters in just over five innings, giving up one earned run on four hits with no walks as the Warriors pushed past St. Helens 4-2 on Monday, March 24.
And in fact, the Lions could hardly make contact. Lascelles threw 54 strikes, and including the eight groundout-flyouts, St. Helens only hit a pitch from Lascelles 12 times.
Despite Lascelles' efforts, the Lions took a lead in the top of the fifth inning. Noah Weitzel sent a grounder to center field, and stole second a few moments later. Another grounder helped Weitzel round third and head for home, putting St. Helens up 1-0 with a man on base and only one out. Aloha, though, pulled things together, throwing out Tyler Stangland at third base and striking out Josh Keller to end the Lions' run.
The Warriors had an answer in the bottom of the fifth, picking up where they left off and scoring two quick runs and taking a 2-1 lead off a two-RBI single from Josh Williams. Aloha got a pair of RBI singles in the sixth inning to jump out 4-1, but were within a solid hit of breaking the game wide open. With two outs, Lascelles was set up with a runner on third and second. The first three pitches were off the mark, and eventually, Lascelles sent a hard ground ball into play. The Lions made quick work of the grounder, throwing Lascelles out at first base, but they had their work cut out for them heading to the seventh.
St. Helens made contact on just about every at-bat in the seventh inning, but couldn't manage a base hit. Winnier got on base after being hit by a pitch, and was able to steal his way home to give the Lions their second run of the morning, but the Warriors made plays on three pop flies to clinch the game and send St. Helens packing.
