Wrestling: Scappoose beats Banks, YC

The league wrestling championships will be Feb. 8 at Yamhill-Carlton High School

With the Cowapa League championships slated for Feb. 8 at Yamhill-Carlton High School, the Indian wrestling team got just the bump of momentum they needed, defeating Banks and Y-C in a double dual at Banks High School on Jan. 31.

The Indians, who won the OSAA wrestling title in 2010, will look to challenge at the state level once again, beginning their title push after a home dual with Tillamook to close out the Cowapa League schedule on Feb. 7. Scappoose has several wrestlers with a solid chance of winning their respective divisions at the state championships, which will take place between Feb. 28 and March 1 at the Memorial Colosseum in Portland.

Last Friday, all the focus was on the task at hand. The Indians blew past Yamhill-Carlton 62-9, dropping just two matches and winning five matches by fall, one by major decision and twice by technical fall.

The dual with Banks, though the Indians won, was far closer. After Colton Bush won by fall in the second round at 113 pounds, the Braves won the next four matches by decision, including a narrow 3-0 decision over Taylor Walden at 126 pounds.

Senior Hunter Hoyt responded to pull the Indians from the tailspin, getting a pin in the second round to break the tie. NAME Nelson won by tech fall at 152, and pins from Jonathan Tardif and Isaiah Goodrich at 170 and 182 respectively put the dual out of reach for Banks, helping Scappoose to a 41-27 win.

Goodrich, who is now 30-1 and will surely make noise at 182 pounds in the state tournament, won both his matches by fall. The pin against the Tigers came in just over a minute, and it took only 35 seconds to pin his opponent during the match against Banks.

Hoyt also won both his matches, winning by 13-0 major decision and by fall.

Note: Snow is in the forecast for Saturday, Feb. 8 and could force a change in the schedule of the Cowapa League championships. Stay tuned for details.
