Wrestling: Scappoose dominates Astoria, Seaside, takes 4th at Elks Invite

Indians will travel to Banks on Friday, Jan. 31

The Indian wrestling program looks like they're well on their way to yet another special season. After blowing past Astoria 61-18 and Seaside 69-6, the Tribe finished fourth at the Hood River Elks Invitational on Jan. 25.

Fourth place might not jump out initially as a solid performance, but as the Indians were the only Class 4A school at the tournament and still finished just 14.5 points from first, it was as much of a statement as any tournament Scappoose has wrestled in thus far.

The tune up, though, was a pair of duals out on the Oregon Coast where Scappoose once again asserted their dominance over their Cowapa League foes.

Against Seaside, only three matches made it into the third round. Braxton Sue pinned Shane Smith in 52 seconds at 106-pounds, and Colton Bush pinned his opponent at 113 in just 25 seconds. Justin Hering won a close 2-1 decision at 132 to keep things perfect for Scappoose before Seaside finally scored a fall in the third round at 138.

Ben Gadbois, wrestling at 170 pounds, didn't get the fall until the last few seconds of the third round, finally pinning Seaside's Justin Ruiz with just 10 seconds remaining. Isaiah Goodrich, Devin Ray and Colton wheeler each pinned their opponents to round off the blowout victory for Scappoose.

Against Astoria, it was more of the same. Scappoose got off to a 49-0 lead before the Fishermen finally scratched the scoreboard, picking up a win by fall at 170. Goodrich picked up another victory, pinning his opponent in just 57 seconds.

The Indians had champions in three different brackets in Hood River, getting first place finishes from Sue, Gadbois and Goodrich. Ray finished second in the 220-pound bracket, and Tayler Walden wrestled his way to a fourth-place finish at 126.

Walden's finish was especially close. After pinning his first two opponents in 49 seconds and 2:45 respectively, Walden lost a 1-0 decision to Hans Rockwell of Riverside. Walden pinned Justin Parsons in 30 seconds on his way to the third place match of the 126-pound bracket.

Sue, now 25-1 after his sweep of the 106-pound bracket, went three rounds in each of the matches. The first two, a 7-1 decision over Jessica DeHart of Hood River and a 10-3 decision over Keiel Resnick of Westview, weren't all that close. The first-place match was different. His opponent, Simon Brown of Cleveland, had won his last two matches by narrow margins and had racked up an impressive 22-3 record heading into the last match of the weekend.

The showing from Gadbois was also a nail-biter. Like Sue, Gadbois went the distance in all three of his matches, winning 8-1 over Johnathan Moran of Churchhill, 3-1 over James Brunson of West Albany and 4-3 over South Eugene's Shane Roach in the 160-pound bracket final.

As expected, Goodrich toyed with his opponents for the first three matches in the 195-pound bracket. The first two, Jakob Fulbright of Wilsonville and Kyeanna Henry of Parkrose, he pinned in 1:01... combined. Goodriched followed up with a 9-1 major decision over Centennial's Ryan Ybarra, and won the bracket with a 7-2 decision over West Albany's Brice Hogan.

Ray rounded off the highlight reel for Scappoose, winning his first two matches by 5-3 decision and 8-0 major decision respectively before succumbing to Steely Smith of West Albany, who got the win by fall over Ray in 4:30 to take first place at 220.

The Indians will travel to Banks for their next dual, facing the Braves on Jan. 31 at 7 p.m.

Note: Scappoose has been without 170 and 182-pounder Jonathan Tardif, who has been sidelined due to illness.
