Wrestling: Lions win another in thrilling fashion
St. Helens builts an early lead on Putnam, and holds on for the one-point victory
The Lion wrestling program seems to have a knack for the dramatic. And thankfully for St. Helens, the drama tends to end well, as was the case on Thursday evening, when the Lions held on just long enough to get a one-point win over Putnam.
Early on, though, it was all St. Helens. Cody Jackson (132) won the first points for the Lions, pinning Putnam's Michael Lewis in a minute and six seconds. Jesse Vanderwall (138) got the technical fall over Putnam's Dylan Wright, and a major decision for Nick Richardson (152) gave St. Helens a 27-16 lead.
A first round pin for Nick Urben (160) and a Putnam forfeit at 170 put the Lions up 39-22, but the dual was far from over. The Kingsmen got a pin at 182 to put them within striking distance, but they had to win each of the final duals by fall. St. Helens' Colton Albertson had other plans. In the 220 match, the next step in the Kingsmen comeback, Albertson refused to go down by fall, and though he lost the 13-2 major decision, it was one point short of what the home squad needed to tie, and two points short of what Putnam needed for a victory. The Kingsmen got a pin at 285, but by that point the dual was already out of their hands.
St. Helens was without freshman sensation Myles Terry, who has alternated between 152 and 160 on his way to an undefeated 21-0 season. Back spasms were the cause, according to Terry, who said he will sit out until next week.
