Scappoose alumnus David Mayo makes waves in Sun Belt football
Selection to all-conference honorable mention team highlights Mayo's junior year.
Though he plays far away in the great state of Texas, Scappoose alumnus David Mayo continues to draw attention as a linebacker at Texas State.
Picked to succeed even during the preseason, Mayo was selected as the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week after a big game against University of Southern Mississippi in the first contest of the year. Though he sat out three games with a bruised MCL, Mayo led the team with four interceptions and had 89 tackles – 63 of them solo – on the season.
Because of his defensive exploits, Mayo was named to the All-Sun Belt honorable mention team in his second year at the University. In his first season, when he played at Santa Monica Junior College, he also picked up conference player of the week and was selected as defensive player of the year for his team.
As a senior at Texas State, Mayo and the rest of the defense will look to build the success they found in their first year as part of the Sun Belt Conference. The Bobcats have bounced around several different league, from the Southland Conference to the Western Athletic Conference – and even a year as an independent – before landing in the Sun Belt in 2013. They had previously won the Southland Conference title in 2005 and 2008 before leaving league and joining the Sun Belt as the largest school in the conference.
