Sherwood downs Lady Lions tennis team
ۻSt. Helens wins just two singles matches against unbeaten Lady Bowmen
The St. Helens Lady Lions knew Sherwood would be tough to beat and they were, after finally getting in a make-up match with them.
Coach Michael Gregor noted that Sherwood is unbeaten in Northwest Oregon Conference play and the defending district champions.
The only wins for St. Helens on the Sherwood courts were by the Lady Lions No. 3 and No. 4 singles teams.
JoCee Giroski ran her season record to 7-0 with a straight set win, 6-3, 6-2. Lauren Chambers had another long match (2-1/2 hours), winning by a tie-breaker in the first set, 7-6, and cruising to a 6-1 second set win.
Madison Kaplan played an excellent match against a veteran opponent (Nancy) Nguyen and took her three sets, Gregor said. Madison is playing very well right now and is hungry to play Nguyen the next time around. Our doubles squads struggled against very experienced teams at this match. We continue to improve every time out and one of our goals is to get our #1 team of Lexi Normine and Hannah Opdahl seeded in the May district tournament.
St. Helens was at Parkrose on Monday and Rex Putnam on Wednesday. They were to travel to Milwaukie on Thursday, April 18, and Liberty on April 23.
