Profiles of new teachers at Grant Watts, Otto Petersen, Warren, Middle School and High School

Numerous new faces will grace the halls of different buildings in the St. Helens School District. Below are profiles of the new staff in the district.

Francis

Sarah Francis

AKA: Ms. Francis

Job: Third grade teacher

School: Sauvie Island Academy

Hometown: Eugene and Boston, Mass.

Previous work experience: Teaching in Acton, Mass.; substitute in the greater Portland area

What are some of the hopes and goals for your new position in the school district?

Build great relationships within the community and to help my students succeed in every way possible, both in and out of the classroom.

What are you looking forward to most about this year?

I am most looking forward to getting to go on new adventures with wonderful students that include learning and growing as individuals.

Harris

Nikki Harris

AKA: Ms. Harris

Job: Band teacher

School: Otto Petersen Elementary School, Scappoose Middle School and Scappoose High School

Hometown: Center Line, Mich.

Previous work experience: Interlochen Arts Academy 2013-14; Lakeview, Oregon, teaching K-12 music (band, choir, and elementary) 2014-2016; Elementary general music in Eugene in 2016-17

What are some of the hopes and goals for your new position in the school district?

I have so much respect for Mr. Jackson (the former band teacher) and what he has done for this band program, and I am hoping to continue his legacy while sharing a new and energetic perspective! (I also dream of bringing a marching band back! Fingers crossed!)

What are you looking forward to most about this year?

I look forward to the performances and competitions. There is nothing more rewarding than showing off the hard work and preparation of students, and nothing more magical than a live performance!

Shay-Rivera

Misty Shay-Rivera

AKA: Ms. Shay

Job: First grade teacher

School: Sauvie Island Academy

Hometown: Manteca, Calif.

Previous work experience: Fifth-grade Outdoor Educator; experience teaching in kindergarten and a fourth and fifth grade blended classroom

What are some of the hopes and goals for your new position in the school district?

To inspire students to be life-long learners. My goal is to continue the growth of the mission of Sauvie Island Academy in integrating place-based instruction with the school content and curriculum.

What are you looking forward to most about this year?

To meeting my class and building a strong classroom community where my students feel safe and can become confident learners.

Olstead

Dennis Olstedt

AKA: Mr. Olstedt

Job: Social studies teacher

School: Scappoose High School

Hometown: Seaside

Previous work experience: Glide Middle School 2014-2017

What are some of the hopes and goals for your new position in the school district?

To build relationships with staff, students and community members of Scappoose. I want to be involved in and around the Scappoose School District. One of my goals for the year is to create a great environment in my class so students can grow and expand their knowledge with regards to social studies.

What are you looking forward to most about this year?

To being a part of a new community and enjoy the area. I am excited to be added onto an already great staff here at Scappoose High School and look forward to meeting students. I am very happy to call Scappoose my home.

Hubbard

Christina Hubbard

AKA: Ms. Hubbard

Job: Music teacher

School: Grant Watts Elementary and Warren Elementary

Previous work experience: K-12 music teacher in Joseph; elementary music and middle school choir in the Centennial School District in Portland; professional singer as a soloist and chorister in Portland; private voice lesson teacher

What are some of the hopes and goals for your new position in the school district?

The goals I have for my students is that they become musically literate, discover their own musical interests and options for a lifetime of music making and enjoyment, develop a creative outlet through music, learn to be a cooperative member of a group and develop an appreciation for listening to and making music from many different genres and cultures.

What are you looking forward to most about this year?

To working with the amazing staff at both Grant Watts Elementary and Warren Elementary and discovering the Scappoose community and its history and traditions.

Boaz

Cameron Boaz

AKA: Mr. Boaz or Boaz

Job: STEM instructor

School: Scappoose Middle School

Hometown: Boring

Previous work experience: Two years subbing and three years teaching science at Tillamook Junior High

What are some of the hopes and goals for your new position in the school district?

To start the STEM program at the Middle School and get kids genuinely excited about science. My goal is to get students to see potential careers in science and understand the importance of science in our daily lives.

What are you looking forward to most about this year?

To getting to know the students and staff that I'll be working with every day.

Horn

Amber Horn

AKA: Mrs. Horn

Job: Sixth through eighth grade science

School: Sauvie Island Academy

Hometown: Bismarck, N.D.

Previous work experience: Fisheries observer in Alaska; German teacher at Fernley High School in Nevada; environmental science and intro German at Lakenheath Middle School in the United Kingdom on a U.S. Air Force base; biology, natural resources, marine biology, physical science at Tillamook High School; natural resources and biology at St. Helens High School

What are some of the hopes and goals for your new position in the school district?

I look forward to teaching at a Place-Based Education focused school since it is what I have been teaching with Natural Resources for the past 11 years! The staff at SIA has been amazingly kind and I look forward to becoming involved with the Sauvie Island community.

What are you looking forward to most about this year?

Going to school with my daughter every day!

Austin

Job: Visual arts

School: Scappoose Middle School

Hometown: Texas

Previous work experience: 27 years in education teaching in Texas, New Mexico and Oregon; most recently daVinci Arts Middle School in Portland

What are some of the hopes and goals for your new position in the school district?

My goal is to build upon the art program at the middle school, and get student art out into the community. Ultimately, I want my students to learn to ENJOY the creative process of creating art.

Cameron

Rhonda Cameron

Job: English Language Learner teacher and reading specialist

School: Grant Watts Elementary School and Warren Elementary School

Hometown: Hanford, Calif.

Previous work experience: Portland Public Schools; Clatskanie School District

What are some of the hopes and goals for your new position in the school district?

I hope to empower my students with confidence to take risks.

What are you looking forward to most about this year?

Getting to know and learn from the staff in my schools.

Adams

Tara Adams

AKA: Mrs. Adams

Job: Preschool Palace instructor

School: Scappoose High School

Hometown: Newport

Previous work experience: Title I coordinator, secondary social studies and kindergarten teacher at Culbertson School District in Culbertson, Mont.

What are some of the hopes and goals for your new position in the school district?

To guide the Preschool Palace CTE program at Scappoose High School towards new goals, aligning with our Portland Community College partnership, while honoring the traditions and needs of both the high school and preschool families.

What are you looking forward to most about this year?

To working with high school and preschool students at the same time. I see this opportunity as my "dream teaching position" because it incorporates my experiences in both secondary and early education. I am excited to see how our Preschool Palace classroom community grows and develops together over the next year.

Ellett

Jessica Ellett

Job: Fifth grade teacher

School: Otto Petersen Elementary School

Hometown: Beaverton

Previous work experience: Middle school Spanish and math teacher; elementary bilingual education

What are some of the hopes and goals for your new position in the school district?

I hope to bring my love for education to my classroom, and provide an encouraging space for my students where they feel comfortable taking chances, making mistakes to grow from, and persevering through challenging tasks.

What are you looking forward to most about this year?

Teaching with an amazing team at Otto Petersen and getting to know all of fifth grade students.

Veronica Miller

AKA: Ms. Miller

Job: Fourth grade teacher

School: Otto Petersen Elementary School

Hometown: Klamath Falls

Previous work experience: Interpretive Park Ranger and an Outdoor Educator

What are some of the hopes and goals for your new position in the school district?

I hope to explore all of the wonders of fourth grade, and I hope to be a helpful addition to an already amazing fourth grade teaching team, and school.

What are you looking forward to most about this year?

I am so excited to get to know each of my students. Teaching is such an amazing experience and having the opportunity to work with so many individuals every year is always an adventure. Everyone thinks and learns in different ways. I think I am most excited to watch everyone grow, and to learn from my students as well.

Natasya Holt

AKA: Mrs. Holt

Job: Kindergarten teacher

School: Grant Watts Elementary School

Hometown: Portland

Previous work experience: First year in the classroom; One year student teaching and one year as an instructional assistant in the Tigard/Tualatin School District; has also worked as a janitor, house cleaner, babysitter and nanny

What are some of the hopes and goals for your new position in the school district?

This year will be full of wonderful things! Since I am a new teacher, I have many goals in my professional life that I look forward to working on. The most important part of what I will be doing though, is to be the role model to my students. My hope and goal is that I will prepare my kinders for the rest of their academic careers!

What are you looking forward to most about this year?

I look forward to introducing all those kinders to what school should be! I look forward to pouring into their hearts and minds and showing them how much I care for them as a whole person. I look forward to watching them grow and succeed!
