Burglars make off with guns, jewelry

Sheriff's Office reports an uptick in burglaries, thefts

Two burglaries and one theft were reported in south Columbia County Tuesday, May 13. Columbia County Sheriff Jeff Dickerson said firearms were taken in two of the incidents.

The first burglary took place between 7 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Tuesday and in which a .22 caliber handgun was reported stolen, Dickerson said. That burglary was reported on Sykes Road in St. Helens.

The second burglary was also reported to have occurred in St. Helens at around 5 p.m. Dickerson said victims reported a laptop and iPod were stolen along with jewelry and potentially more items.

Dickerson said a theft was reported to have occurred on North Road in Scappoose Tuesday night, wherein a .22 caliber rifle was stolen.

The sheriff said he didn’t have any additional details on the burglaries or the theft, as reports on the incidents have not been completed. He said such reports typically take a week to complete.

Dickerson indicated he has seen an increase in such crimes lately, noting that deputies recently recovered a stolen pickup on South Canaan Road outside of St. Helens.

“We also recovered a theft of a log splitter and a stolen truck and a bunch of stolen equip and goods,” he said.
