Fitzgibbons resigns from Columbia City council

Councilor moves north to Deer Island, surrenders position with Columbia City

Shannon Fitzgibbons resigned Thursday evening, March 20, from her seat on the City Council of Columbia City.

Fitzgibbons is moving out of city limits — to Deer Island, about three miles north of Columbia City, she said — and had to step down because she will no longer be a Columbia City resident.

“It is with regret that we accept your resignation at this time,” said Mayor Cheryl Young. “Your accomplishments have been many and great.”

Columbia City Police Chief Mike McGlothlin noted Fitzgibbons’ support for the Columbia City Police Department.

“You’ve been a heck of a champion for us, and we appreciate it,” said McGlothlin.

“Well, you’re just going to have to bring Deer Island into Columbia City,” Fitzgibbons joked.

Fitzgibbons was elected to the City Council in 2010. Her term was set to expire at the end of this year.

Young said she intends to nominate a replacement for Fitzgibbons at the next council meeting, which is scheduled for Thursday, April 3.

The City Council of Columbia City has four members, not including the mayor of the city.
