Major traffic control change

SOUTH PORTLAND — The southbound loop ramp from westbound Sellwood Bridge has been closed permanently to motorized vehicles. Southbound traffic will be diverted north to the new turnaround at Southwest Taylors Ferry Road. Drivers should not perform illegal U-turns at or before the Taylors Ferry intersection.

The southbound loop ramp will stay open to bicyclists and pedestrians traveling to River View Cemetery until a new bike/pedestrian traffic signal is activated in early November. The city of Portland will increase the sensitivity of the signal loops so that bikes may activate them. Bikes need to stay on top of the loops in order to activate the signal. During work hours, flaggers may assist with bike and pedestrian crossing.

This major traffic change is needed so that the east half of the Highway 43 interchange can be built. The interchange is scheduled to be completed in 2015. Motorists should expect long delays, especially during the rush hours, and the city encourages drivers to seek alternate routes if possible.
