Colton coach Dan Leighton said the injured player was with a group doing a tackling drill when he fell and hurt the back of his neck shortly before 7 p.m.

A few minutes later, the player complained that his fingers were numb and Leighton called 911 from his cell phone at 7:06 p.m.

Emergency personnel from Colton Rural Fire Protection District No. 70 responded within three minutes and made the call for Life Flight.

Molalla Rural Fire Protection District No. 73 also assisted, attending to the injured player on the field just below and to the west of the high school football field.

Life Flight landed on the high school football field about 7:35 p.m. and departed about 12 minutes later.

Colton’s first official football practice was on Monday, although several players had been working out regularly with coaches at the school for the past few weeks. The team was in full pads and helmets for Friday’s workout.

The Vikings are scheduled to play in a four-team jamboree with North Marion, St. Paul and Woodburn at North Marion High School on Friday. The season opener is Sept. 5 against the Taft Tigers in Lincoln City.
