'True Grub' restaurants support GMO labeling campaign

Dozens of Portland restaurants are joining forces with the Oregon Right to Know GMO labeling campaign this summer in an initiative called True Grub.

Participating restaurants will donate a portion of their proceeds from certain nights to the GMO labeling campaign, now known as Measure 92 on the November ballot.

The restaurants have been vetted by the campaign for their support of the campaign and their "commitment to honest, delicious food that people can trust," says campaign spokesman Thomas Mosher.

If approved by voters statewide, Measure 92 would create guidelines similar to that of 64 other countries that require the labeling of genetically engineered food.

In the past couple of weeks, the campaign scored endorsements from Whole Foods and the City Club in Portland.

True Grub rolled out in June with restaurants including Brooklyn House Restaurant, Pacific Pie Company and Bamboo Sushi.

Erica Litzner, co-owner of Brooklyn House, called their event a success, akin to a "random Valentine's Day in the middle of June." She says it boosted their exposure to new customers who are loyal to the movement as well as the larger farm-to-fork movement.
