Police identify couple in murder-suicide

by: KOIN NEWS 6 - SERT and police respond to shooting in 2500 block of 141st Avenue on Friday, June 27.Portland have identified the man and women killed in Friday's apparent murder-suicide.

The victim is Maria Soumphonpackdy, 42. The Oregon State Medical Examiner determined that she died of multiple gunshot wounds.

Police say she was shot by her husband, Jack Soumphonpackdy, 60. He then turned the gun on himself and died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Detectives have learned that Maria recently filed for divorce from Jack, which may have led to the shooting.

Police responded to a shooting at the Amber Court apartments in the 2500 block of SE 141st Ave. just after 5:30 p.m. on June 27. The area was blocked off for a number of hours as Special Emergency Reaction Team members launched tear gas, medics were brought in and PPB crisis negotiators attempted to make contact with the people inside.

The first responding officers entered the apartment and heard another gunshot. Not knowing whether it came from inside or outside, the officers retreated.

At that point, SERT and the Crisis Negotiation team were called in. Crisis negotiators were unable to make contact with anyone inside the apartment.

SERT then launched several rounds of tear gas into the home and after entering, found the man and woman dead inside.

The Portland Police Bureau’s homicide team is taking over the investigation, and there is no current threat to the public, PPB Public Information Officer Pete Simpson said.

“It’s crazy, stuff like this doesn’t happen out here that much,” said neighbor Diego Flores, who lived on the street his whole life.

He said police use of tear gas “wasn’t OK.”

Portland Police said no officers fired shots during the incident.
