Crowbar attack led to police shooting


Robbery report sparked confrontation along Springwater Trail

A man swinging a crowbar during a fight with two Portland police officers was shot and killed Thursday morning after reports of a robbery on the Springwater Trail.

The officers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave. They were not injured. The name of the suspect has not been released.

The shooting happened shortly before 6:30 a.m. on the Springwater Corridor Trail near Southeast 104th Street and Foster Road. Officers found the robbery victim, and began searching for the suspect, who was off the road near the trail.

According to police, the man began fighting with one of the officers, knocking him to the ground. The man was swinging a crowbar at the officer on the ground when the second officer shot him.

Foster Road was closed to all traffic from Southeast 101st to 112th avenues during the investigation.
