Child falls out of window, dies

by: KOIN NEWS 6 - The Miraflores Apartments in North Portland, where a 4-year-old fell out of a three-story window and later died.A 4-year-old child died after falling out of a three-story window at a North Portland apartment complex Wednesday, according to police.

North Precinct officers and firefighters from Portland Fire & Rescue responded to the Miraflores Apartments, located at 8925 North Newell Avenue, at 7:17 p.m. on the report that a child had fallen out of a three-story window and was critically injured.

According to Rich Chatman with Portland Fire and Rescue, the 4-year-old was unconscious when he was transported to Randall Children’s Hospital at Legacy Emanuel.

Portland police confirmed that the boy died at the hospital after life-saving efforts were not successful.

Preliminary information indicated that the incident may have been an accidental fall, but authorities said detectives from the Homicide Detail and Child Abuse Team were responding to conduct an investigation along with criminalists from the Forensic Evidence Division.

Neighbors told KOIN 6 that two girls fell out of a window at the same complex just last year.

Brenda Brown confirmed that she was watching the girls, 2 and 3 at the time, last June. Brown said when she went to use the restroom briefly, the two girls fell from the kitchen window of her apartment after the latches on the window came loose. Both girls survived the accident.

Since then, Brown said maintenance has come to inspect her windows and noted that they should be replaced, but management at the complex has never taken action to do so.

“As it is now, I’m very sad because they could have prevented this, and I don’t even really want to talk because I just thank god my kids are okay. That little boy is not okay. I tried a week, two weeks ago to get them to fix these things. I ask management and everything and they’re not safe for kids,” said Brown.

Brown explained that she stopped pushing the issue after she says management became angry with her, going as far as to send her an eviction notice.

Other tenants said they also have been pushing management to get improved safety locks on the windows.
