Fire at Public Storage facility ruled arson
Clackamas Fire District No. 1 investigators Thursday determined that arson was the cause of the early-morning blaze on Sunday, May 25, at the self-storage facility in unincorporated Clackamas County.
The fire caused an estimated $35,000 in damage to the structure and $10,000 in damage to its contents. Run by the Public Storage company at 11485 S.E. 82nd Ave., business officials declined to comment on the ongoing investigation.
First reports came from neighbors smelling smoke at midnight, and first-responding fire personnel soon called for back up from additional Clackamas Fire stations. Responding to the fire in the secure facility, firefighters were able to contain the blaze to two storage units in just 25 minutes. Clackamas Fire spokesman Brandon Paxton noted six units had to be opened to check that the fire had not spread farther.
Due to the locked gates, firefighters had to force open the entrance to the business and use special saws to access the involved units. They used nearly 1,000 feet of hose to get water from a hydrant down the street to suppress the heavily packed storage units. They were thankful to report that no injuries were sustained during their firefighting operations.
An investigation led by the Oregon State Police is still open, and anyone has any information relating to this incident is asked to call the Clackamas Fire Prevention Office at 503-742-2660.
