Back from China, Ferguson back in mayoral race

Milwaukie Mayor Jeremy Ferguson announced Wednesday he’s going to run for re-election after all.

by: FILE PHOTO - FergusonIn January, Ferguson pulled out of the Clackamas County Commission race and announced he would not seek re-election as mayor since he was starting a new job, finalizing his divorce and seeking more time with his son. After taking time to reflect on trips to Haiti and China, Ferguson concluded that all of his personal or professional goals could still be achieved while keeping his volunteer role as a civic servant.

“Life has settled down, and the trip to China put into perspective for me that the things done in Milwaukie can have impact worldwide,” Ferguson said.

While attending an Eco Summit in China earlier this month, Ferguson realized that being in the position of mayor can inspire change on a global scale as well as at the regional level. Seated next to China's deputy director of energy conservation who also oversees nuclear power for the communist nation, he was invited to return to Beijing to help reduce China’s coal use and carbon emissions.

“Being the mayor of Milwaukie has shown me just how working on a local level in a small town can directly affect so many people, “ Ferguson said. “The enthusiasm I have felt not only by citizens, as well as the employees at the city and other groups, have convinced me that my work here is not complete. I look forward to building on the momentum of the last six years and really being able to affect some more positive changes in the community.”

Also during the China Summit, Ferguson introduced Milwaukie's Sustainability plan from 2007 and shared accomplishments the city made since. An organization representing Australian governments then asked him to help form the framework for municipal governments to start sustainability plans Down Under.
