In a well-choreographed media event Tuesday afternoon at the Hillsboro Ballpark, Mayor Jerry Willey announced that the new name for the stadium where the Hillsboro Hops Class A baseball team plays will be Ron Tonkin Field.
Ron Tonkin, who passed away in January, was the owner of the Ron Tonkin Family of Dealerships, a major Northwest auto dealer.
"This is a perfect marriage of our father's love for baseball and our love for him," said Ed Tonkin, Ron's son.
The naming rights deal is for 10 years, in which the Tonkin company will pay $150,000 per year for the right to have the stadium called Ron Tonkin Field. The city will receive 70 percent of that money each year $105,000 while the Hops organization receives the remainder, $45,000.
"It's a special day for us," said K.L. Wombacher, general manager of the Hillsboro Hops.
