Bike riders expected to 'swarm' city transportation town hall

Portland’s transportation budget town hall Thursday evening is expected to attract a swarm — of bicycles.

Portland bike riders plan a “swarm ride” through Southeast Portland to the town hall meeting with city officials at Woodstock School, 5601 S.E. 50th Ave. The town hall is from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Bike riders plan to meet at 5 p.m. at Ladd’s Circle. They will ride as a swarm from Southeast Ninth Avenue and Madison Street.

Bicycle groups promoting the ride online say it is to draw attention to bicycle-related spending and projects in the Transportation Bureau’s budget.

The city’s Thursday, May 1, town hall is the final in series focusing on transportation spending.

A assessment of the city’s 4,827 miles of streets released Tuesday, April 29, found that maintenance of the aging pavement lagged. According to the report, 48 percent of the city’s most trafficked streets were in poor or very poor condition. The bureau’s goal is to have 80 percent of those streets in fair or better condition.

City officials might ask voters to approve a fee to pay for increased maintenance of local streets. No proposal has been set for the fee, which would augment state gas tax revenue, as the city gauges the public’s support for a possible fee.
