Escaped inmate taken into custody at fast-food restaurant

The tattooed inmate who escaped Wednesday afternoon from a Northeast Portland corrections facility was recaptured Wednesday night at a fast-food restaurant at Columbia and Northeast Martin Luther King Jr. boulevards.

Matthew Joseph Medlin, 30, was taken into custody at about 10 p.m. April 30 outside a Jack In The Box. Police said Medlin at first refused officers' commands, but was taken into custody after several other officers, and a K-9 unit, arrived.

He was being treated for injuries he suffered during the escape and will be booked into the Multnomah County Jail.

Medlin escaped Wednesday afternoon from the Columbia River Correctional Institute on Northeast Sunderland Avenue by climbing a fence. He was serving time for burglary, sex abuse and assault. He was scheduled to be released on Tuesday, May 6.
