Alleged teen sex assault rattles North Portland

by: KOIN NEWS 6 - Police are investigating a teenage girl's report of being sexually assaulted near Parkrose High School.Residents of North Portland are on alert after a 16-year-old student at Parkrose High School was allegedly sexually assaulted by a stranger Monday on her way to school.

Portland Police sent out a public alert Monday recommending self defense when a girl reported she was assaulted NE 131st Avenue and Prescott Drive.

Neighbors in the area are worried.

“I”m terrified, actually,” said mother Tisha Delgado.

She said since hearing about the alleged sexual assault of the 16-year-old girl, she has become increasingly worried about her daughter’s safety.

“I’m always concerned, definitely, no matter where she’s at or where she goes or who shes with I’m always concerned,” said Delgado.

Officials with the Portland Police Department said random attacks on strangers are rare in the neighborhood.

Still, KOIN 6 News investigated attacks in the area using a map obtained through the City of Portland’s crime database, showing every assault within half a mile of the school.

The last attempted or actual assault was in August 2013.

“People need to be aware of what’s going on,” said Judy Downs, who has two young grand daughters.

“We always teach our girls if you see somebody behind you or they see something that’s not right, cross the street.”

The City of Portland’s office of neighbourhood involvement, in combination with the Portland Police Bureau are hosting a safety and resource fair Wednesday to address the issue of sexual assaults in the city.

The event is being held from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the Grant Park Church at 2728 NE 34th Ave.
