Man held for abuse of toddler faces more charges after child dies

by: COURTESY OF MCSO - JOSHUA HOWARDA 28-year-old former Astoria man arrested Wednesday could face more serious charges after an injured 2-year-old boy died Thursday.

The boy was found seriously injured in a Southeast Portland motel. Joshua Howard was booked into the Multnomah County Jail March 5 on a charge of first-degree assault. He was arraigned Thursday in Multnomah County Circuit Court.

Howard is the boyfriend of the boy’s mother. Police were called at 9:36 p.m. Tuesday, March 4, to the Unicorn Motel, 3040 S.E. 82nd Ave., where they found the unconscious 2-year-old boy with what police called suspicious injuries on the child. One officer performed life-saving CPR until medical personnel arrived and continued life saving measures until the child arrived at a Portland hospital.

Based on the suspicious circumstances, detectives from the Family Services Division and the homicide detail began an investigation, which resulted in Howard’s arrest.
