Police arrest armored ATM robbery suspect

by: MULTNOMAH COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE - Mark George FischerPolice arrested a 32-year-old man Sunday who was wearing body armor and trying to burn his way into a U.S. Bank ATM.

Police said Mark George Fischer also attempting to use pepper spray against an officer during the incident. Fischer was charged with being a felon in possession of body armor, first-degree attempted aggravated theft, attempted assault on a police officer, third-degree attempted escape, interfering with a peace officer, menacing and possession of burglary tools.

According to police, at 2:59 p.m. on March 2, Central Precinct officers responded to Southeast 36th Place and Powell Boulevard on the report that a man was trying to burn a U.S. Bank ATM. Police were told the man tried to use a torch to cut into the ATM and was walking away, carrying a backpack.

An officer found the man with a backpack, walking west through the Rose City Strip parking lot. As the officer got out of the patrol car to talk to the suspect, the man sprayed a liquid toward the officer, missing him. The liquid sprayed at the officer was pepper spray.

The suspect dropped the backpack, which contained an acetylene torch and a stun gun, and ran. The officer followed the suspect on a brief foot chase until suspect gave up and was taken into custody.

During the search of Fischer, it was found that he was wearing two ballistic vests. Fischer also had multiple ballistic panels sewn into his undergarments. The panels covered his arms, legs, buttocks and crotch area. Fischer was also armed with a large knife.
