Fagan hosts 'Tips & Tools for Local Employers'

State Rep. Shemia Fagan (D–East Portland/North Clackamas) is partnering with the Small Business Development Center at Clackamas Community College to host a series of five informational workshops to help small businesses in our community succeed.

“We are very excited to host this series of workshops,” said Robert Campbell of the Small Business Development Center. “These are issues that local businesses struggle with and we are delighted to see Rep. Fagan take an active role in addressing them.”

“As a business attorney, I know firsthand how tough it can be for small businesses to navigate employment laws,” Fagan said. “I’m eager to give our local companies the tools they need to succeed here in Oregon.”

Fagan has invited over 5,000 local businesses to these workshops, which are free and open to the public. The workshops will feature experts on employment laws who will provide information and answer questions on the fourth Tuesday of each month from February through June from 7:30 a.m. to 8:45 a.m., at the Clackamas Community College Harmony Campus, room OIT 191. Feb. 25 – Leave Laws

Oregon Family Leave Act: covered employers, covered employees, and types and lengths of leave.

March 25 – Legal Hiring Practices

Job descriptions, applications, and legal and effective interviewing.

April 22 – Common Wage and Hour Mistakes

Final paychecks, lawful deductions, and rest and meal period rules.

May 27 – Real World Disability Issues

What to do if an employee asks for disability accommodation, including medical inquiries, interactive process, and links to useful resources.

June 24 – Documenting Employee Performance

Effective documentation of employee job performance, including performance logs, verbal and written warnings.
