One person was killed and five others suffered unknown injuries after the car they were in hit a power pole, officials said.
The crash, which was reported just before 6 a.m. Sunday near the intersection of Northeast Fremont Street and Northeast 102nd Avenue, is being investigated by the Multnomah County Sheriffs Office because it is located within the City of Maywood Park, which is located within the City of Portland, emergency dispatchers said. Officers with the Portland Police Bureau responded to help contact any potential witnesses, dispatchers said.
A Portland Fire and Rescue spokesperson told KOIN 6 News that one person died on scene and that a second person was ejected from the vehicle. Firefighters said a total of three ambulances were called to the scene.
Lt. Derrick Peterson, a spokesperson with the Multnomah County Sheriffs Office told KOIN 6 News that the deceased is an African-American male, but no other information was being released about him until family notifications could be made. Peterson said five other people inside the vehicle suffered various injuries and had been transported to local hospitals. Deputies have not yet identified the driver of the vehicle, Peterson said. He also said it was too early to determine if speed, alcohol or drugs played a factor in the crash. The East Multnomah County Vehicle Crash Team is responding to the scene, Peterson said.
Officials said anyone traveling through the area of Northeast 102nd and Northeast Sandy should expect some road closures as law enforcement conduct their investigation throughout the morning.
