Region thawing out, some problems persist

The region is getting back to normal as the snow and ice begins to melt.

Some problems continue, however, including hazardous conditions in the Gresham area. As of 9:00 a.m. Monday, City Transportation Operations Superintendent Rae Sorenson described the vicinity of 181st Avenue and Interstate 84 as a "solid sheet of ice," and urged caution between Sandy Boulevard and Glisan Street on 181st Avenue.

Gresham transportation crews and the Oregon Department of Transportation "are tackling it with everything we can put on it to get it to melt," including sanding trucks and de-icing equipment, said Sorenson.

In Portland, all city offices were scheduled to open at 10 a.m. Monday. That includes all Portland Parks & Recreation community centers and pools 10 a.m. They had all closed over the weekend.

Buckman Pool will still be be closed on Monday, however, as will all SUN schools.

Most flights were expected to operate at Portland International Airport. As of Monday monring, only two flights were cancelled, but as always, travelers are encouraged to check their flight schedules for any possible changes before coming to the airport. Flight schedules are available at http://www.pdx.com, or by contacting airlines.

Transportation officials were still urging drivers to exercise caution, however. That includes those in Gresham, where roadways were wet with some icy spots, particularly in the higher elevations.
