Grand jury says Mystic Club shooting justified
A Multnomah County grand jury has declined to bring charges against a bouncer in the Jan. 11 shooting at the Mystic Gentlemans Club that killed a gunman who shot at club customers.
The district attorneys office reported Friday morning, Jan. 31, that the grand jury determined the use of deadly force against gunman 43-year-old Thomas Elliott Hjelmeland by club bouncer Jonathan Baer was justified under Oregon criminal law.
Hjelmeland died from his gunshot wounds Jan. 16. Club employee 26-year-old Brian Thomas Rizzo was shot in the head and is still in the hospital.
Two other people were treated and released for wounds after the shooting.
Portland police said that at about 8:45 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, Hjelmeland walked into the club at 9950 S.E. Stark St. and began firing at customers. He struck bouncer Rizzo and two people in the club. Another bouncer shot Hjelmeland.
