Police arrest suspect accused of mugging elderly woman
Police have arrested a woman suspected of stealing purses, including one incident when an 89-year-old woman was mugged.
Tiffany Denise Smith, 33, was arrested at noon on Tuesday at Southeast 130th Avenue and Division on an unrelated arrest warrant out of Clackamas County.
Smith is now charged Robbery, Assault, Burglary and Identity Theft.
According to police, the investigation began at 2:39 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 7, when East Precinct officers responded to a residence in the 2100 block of Southeast 148th Place on the report of a strong-arm robbery and learned that the suspect grabbed an 89-year-old woman's purse and threw her to the ground.
During the course of the investigation, detectives learned of a December 2013 incident where a suspect knocked on the door of a Southeast Portland home in the 4800 block of Southeast Henderson Street, pushed passed the 90-year-old woman who answered the door, stole her purse off of the dining room table, then ran back out the front door. The victim in this case did not call 9-1-1 and waited until the next day to call police.
Detectives are continuing to investigate other cases with similarities to see if the suspect was involved in any additional crimes.
