Police use sandwich to get man off a ledge
A sandwich helped Portland police defuse a tense situation and get a man off the ledge of a downtown parking structure Saturday morning.
Officers from the Central Precinct said the man who apparently had been experiencing behavioral health problems, was taken into custody without incident and was evaluated at a local hospital.
The mans name and medical condition have not been released.
The incident began at about 11:10 a.m. Dec. 28, when officers were called to the parking structure at Southwest 15th Avenue and Yamhill Street. There they found a naked man sitting on a ledge of the structure, cutting himself with a knife and threatening to jump. A Police Bureau Enhanced Crisis Intervention Team officer started talking with the man, who told officers that he was hungry. Officers got a sandwich from the nearby Hotel Deluxe and used it lure the man away from the ledge, where he was taken into custody.
An investigation will determine if the man should face criminal charges for vandalism to vehicles in the parking structure.
